19th May 2013:Flyer Proposing Option D for Theydon Bois:
TB&DRPS, TBAG and a number of residents have reported the the leaflet below that is circulating in the Village to our Parish Council. It was discussed at last Thursday's Parish Council Planning Meeting and reported to EFDC.
Theydon Bois Parish Council wish to bring your attention that it is to an unsolicited and unofficial circular (with tear off reply slip). The circular concerns a so called 'Option D' for inclusion in the Issues and Options Consultation. The land in question is situated off the B172 Abridge Road, South west of the M11 bridge. You will note that the document is 'lobbying' for the inclusion of this site as 'Option D' in the next stage of the Local Plan Consultation process. The tear off reply slip gives a return address in Loughton that is occupied by a private company and requests a response by 24th May.
The Parish Council and Interest Groups are most concerned that this circular is arguably presented in very similar format to the EFDC Community Choices - Issues and Options documentation and there may well be confusion in the minds of residents as to whether this an official EFDC communication. The document uses similar graphics, mapping, presentation and terminology and could be said to be misleading.
The Parish Council, Theydon Bois & District Rural Preservation Society and Theydon Bois Action Group have all commented that they are not making a judgment on the contents of the flyer, other than to state that their objective is, as ever, to protect all Metropolitan Green Belt within the Parish of Theydon Bois from inappropriate development.

2nd May 2013:Epping Forest Neighbourhood Watch Steering Group Report:
As promised, and rather belated for which I apologise, is a short summary of a meeting held by the Epping Forest Neighbourhood Watch Steering Group, of which I am a member, and Mr Nick Alston the newly elected Police and Crime Commissioner for Essex, held on 16th April 2013 .
As most people are aware, major changes have recently taken place in the Police Service Structure partly caused by budget cuts . This has meant that no Senior Officer has stayed in his/her role long enough for any of us to build some sort of relationship that is vital to any type of partnership . The committee were assured that the high level of senior staff movements would slow down, but not at the cost of peoples careers. Mr Alston told the committee that there will be a greatly improved co-operation between Neighbourhood Watch and the local Police teams, and we have already noted a positive change in this since our new Inspector has arrived . He assured the Committee that the concerns that were raised with him, namely Stability, Communication, and Priorities for Neighbourhood Watch and Rural Policing would be put to the Senior Police Officers in charge. He stressed that his role is advisory only.
You will have a chance to question him at an open meeting at the Epping Forest Council Chambers on Thursday 23rd May from 6—00 to 8—00 (see below). Hope to see you there.

1st May 2013: THEYDON BOIS SINGERS - Director of Music to Retire after G & S Concert:
Janet Cass Conducting Theydon Bois SingersJanet Cass, our Director of Music since 2001, has decided to retire after our next concert in July. Jan has led a happy choir, making rehearsals fun whilst still expecting and achieving high standards in our performances. Under her leadership the choir has flourished and is regarded as one of the best small choirs in the local area. For her last concert on Saturday July 6th, Jan has chosen for us to perform a ‘Selection from the Operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan’ and we hope that as many people as possible will be able to join us on this occasion.
We are pleased to announce that Lawrence Tatnall will be taking over as our Director of Music in September and we look forward to continuing to flourish under his direction.
1st May 2013:TB&DRPS Deer Sanctuary Walk on Sunday 12th May:
For the second year a special event has been organised by the Rural Preservation Society for 2pm on Sunday 12th May to visit the Deer Sanctuary which is located within the village boundary. Many residents do not realise that Theydon Bois is almost unique in having a near 100 acre Deer Sanctuary so close to its houses. Access, until recently was rare and is still only occasionally agreed by the City of London who administer the Deer Sanctuary as part of its management of Epping Forest.

Therefore this is a rare opportunity for residents, their families and friends to see inside the sanctuary and learn about it from Forest Keeper, Michael Collins.Robert Levene, a Committee member of the Rural Preservation Society, will lead everyone interested from the Village Hall, leaving strictly at 2pm, on a gentle walk which is suitable for anyone able to walk for about 1 mile. Children and buggies allowed in the Deer Sanctuary, but sorry no dogs.
1st May 2013: Police Commissioner to Give Talk in Epping:
The first elected Essex Police and Crime Commissioner , Mr Nick Alston, will be coming to Epping to talk, and also answer questions on, Policing in the Epping Forest District and his plans for the future, on Thursday 23rd May .
The meeting will be at the Epping Forest Council Civic Offices and will start at 6 pm until 8 pm . I have recently attended one of his meetings and found him a very interesting speaker.

1st May 2013: Please Watch Out Burglars About:
We have just been notified by our Neighbourhood Policeman that, unfortunately there has been another burglary in Dukes Avenue . Two males gained entry by way of the side of the building and then through a rear window . This all happened at around 2—45 and 3—00 yesterday - Tuesday. One suspect was a white male , stockily built , with blond spiky hair , possibly wearing a green jumper and jeans and was seen walking in Purlieu Way . The other suspect was 6ft tall,again stockily built, , short mousy hair and wearing a white t-shirt and jeans. A green car, make and registration number unknown , was seen parked nearby.

25th March 2013: OSTED Upgraded Theydon Bois Primary School to Lose Its Head:
Following the recent assessment by the government education watchdog Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED) the Theydon Bois Primary School was officially upgraded from satisfactory to good. The School has 310 pupils, the majority who whom first join with language and literacy skills below the national average, a situation which is reversed by the time they leave Year 6. The Inspectors said “Some teaching was outstanding and high expectations were apparent throughout the School”.
Sadly, and subsequent to the assessment, Head Teacher Elspeth Bonds announced that she would be retiring in August after 15 years at the School. In a letter to staff and pupils she said ”The years have been eventful with many challenges and successes. The School has been well served by many staff, governors and volunteers from whom I have received tremendous commitment and support”.
25th March 2013: Theydon Bois Burglaries Warning:
I have just been notified by our local Policeman that there were two burglaries in Theydon yesterday last Thursday, one in Dukes Avenue and one in Baldocks Road. This follows the recent burglaries in Backacre Road and Poplar Avenue. Please check your security, ask everyone to keep their eyes & ears open and report anything suspicious directly to the police.

25th March 2013: Theydon Bois Neigbourhood Watch to get Fuller Crime Statistics:
Many of you may be aware that in the past year or two members of the Essex Neighbourhood Watch Committee and the Epping Forest N/Watch Committee have been at our wits’ end in trying to persuade the Police to issue us with more information relating to crimes etc in our own areas.I am pleased to say it would appear that they have now changed their attitude and have promised to release regular information to us in the future.
As is now we will not be told the name of those concerned or the numbers of their houses, but we will also be given the Crime Figures for our own areas. This information will be passed to me and other Area N/Watch Co-Ordinators who will then disseminate it to all of their N/Watch members and friends as in the past .I would be grateful if you would pass this information on .
I may have more information for you after 16th April as I and my colleagues on the Epping Forest N/Watch Committee are meeting with Nick Alston, the new Essex Police Commissioner, about among other things, the lack of Police presence in our area . If any of you are interested , this matter will also be brought up at the next Theydon Bois Parish Council meeting on Thursday 29th March at the Village hall at 8 pm where it is hoped that there will be a Police presence. Please come if you can.
Again I am very grateful for all your help and support and would like to add that the way we obtain our information and pass it round the Village etc has been cited by other districts as a good example.

25th March 2013: Theydon Bois Golf Club Introduce New Membership Deals:
The weather hasn't been kind to golfers over these past few weeks so the new Chairman Theydon Bois Golf Club Chairman, Mike Blagden has under his stewardship the Club has, for a trial period, introduced a Family membership where one adult member paying a full fee entitles the spouse/partner and one child living at the same address to FREE membership.
A Sunday membership has also been introduced, the £200 fee entitles members to play on a Sunday and participate in all Sunday competitions. The afternoon green on Monday to Thursday has also been reduced to £15.
25th March 2013: Theydon Bois Student is a Top Karter:
Debden Park High School student Oliver Longshaw (15), of Baldocks Road Theydon Bois, has won a place in the Regional Final of the BSKC. Together with his team mates, Ben Green (15) from High Beech and Jaiden Fenton (14) of Waltham Abbey, the boys qualified through to the next round of the competition after winning their first round heat at Brentwood Karting Circuit on 25th February.
The team have been lucky enough to secure a sponsorship deal with Sytner Mini Harold Wood and race under the name DPHS Sytner Mini. All three boys are keen drivers and have gained valuable experience as members of the Brentwood Karting Academy.

25th March 2013:TB&DRPS Deer Sanctuary Walk - 12th April:
Unfortunately the last issue of Village News (March) carried the information that on the Theydon Bois & District Rural Preservation Society's walk of 12th April, that includes a visit to the Deer Sanctuary, dogs would be permitted on leads. We have now been told by keeper Michael Collins that no dogs are permitted in the Deer Sanctuary, so they can not be taken on this walk. They will still be allowed on the remaining Society Walks in 2013, with lead restrictions in some areas.

Record and Memorabilia Sale:On Monday 1 April, Easter Monday. Andrew Pryor,an expert in valuable and collectable vinyl records is holding a record and memorabilia sale in St Mary’s Church Hall, Churchgate Street Village, near Old Harlow between 10 am and 4.30 pm. As well as around 2000 LPs, there will be a range of vintage but unworn artists clothing – sweatshirts, T-shirts, baseball caps, from artists such as The Shadows, Elton John, Oasis, Roy Orbison etc. and to make sure there’s something for everyone, there will also be books, garden plants and refreshments on sale.
Make a note on your calendar, tell your family and friends, go along and have a browse. In support of Cancer Research UK, Andrew’s will be happy to evaluate old vinyl record collections, and sell them, in return for a donation to CRUK of at least 15% of the price obtained. 1st March 2013 Theydon Bois Golf Club Celebrity Evening with Sally Gunnell:
On Thursday 14th March 2013 at 7.30pm, Theydon Bois Golf Club is having a celebrity evening where the guest speaker will be our local Olympian Sally Gunnell. Following a talk by Sally she will be pleased to enter into a question and answer session. 28th February 2013 Primary School Oak Tree Felled:
It is very sad, but unfortunately it had to happen, in view of the dangerous state of the tree. Our Village Tree Warden Sue Warren, who took the above photos recently, had tried her best together with with Cllr. Anthony Purkiss and Chris Neilan from EFDC to have the tree saved. A pica survey was carried out and Chris Neilan looked at the results and said that he had not expected it to be so bad. Apparently the rot was not just in the centre of the trunk, but in places it had extended to within a few inches of the outer bark at the base, so it is in a very bad way. At least now there was no doubt that it had to go and their would be no prolonged arguments with Essex County Council about trying to save it.
Sue had a brief chat with Steve, the school caretaker after the tree came down and he said that it took the tree surgeons 3 days in all to complete the felling in half term week, which was obviously the ideal time to fell the tree.
The school are hoping to get a good cross section from the tree to count the rings and work out how old the tree was. They might be able to make a seat for the playground if they can get a good sound section to work from.

27th February 2013 Preservation Society's 2013 Walks to Include a Deer Sanctuary Visit:
The Theydon Bois & District Rural Preservation Society’s walks in the forest and countryside around the village have been an annual event for many years and this year will be no exception! This year, as usual, all the walks will start from the village hall at 2pm on Sunday afternoons and last for about two hours. The 2013 dates are 14th April, 12th May, 9th June, 7th July and 8th September.
Last year many people wanted to attend our walk that for the first time gave a rare opportunity to visit the Deer Sanctuary, but they were put off by torrential rain on the morning of the walk. We are pleased to say that the City of London Conservators will allow us to visit again this year on 12th May. This walk will be led by Robert Levene and in the deer sanctuary Forest Keeper Michael Collins will tell us about the care and conservation of the unique herd of deer. We hope the weather improves this time.
Suitable clothes and footwear should be worn for all our walks and dogs are welcome but must be on a lead at times, especially in the deer sanctuary. Please put the dates in your diary now and look out for posters around the village that will remind you.

27th February 2013 Theydon Bois Village News is Again in Top 3 Essex Community Magazines:
Village News Editor Tony Ames (centre) receives the awardVillage News Editor Tony Ames, Village Website Editor Jim Watts and Parish Clerk Gloria Mussenden attended this years annual Essex Life Community Awards Competition run by the RCCE (Rural Community Council of Essex) sponsored by Essex Life Magazine & the Diocese of Chelmsford.
From an entry of 42 publications, we were delighted to learn that we were in the top three community magazines along with Ambo from Radwinter, Hempstead & The Sampfords (1st) and The Yellow Book from Steeple Bumpstead (2nd). We shared 3rd place with The Link from Stansted Mountfitchet.
In the last four years Theydon Bois Village News has always been in the top 3 magazines, winning first place twice. Many thanks to all the team, from the editorial committee, to the providers of copy, to our sponsors and our individual deliverers. All are important parts of and contribute to, the continuing success of Theydon News Desk and our Village News.

On Friday 1st February 2013, Frank Foster House celebrated National Dignity Day with Residents, Families, Staff and Local Partners, using the day to promote Runwood Homes year of Dignity. Frank Foster House will promote a different side of dignity every month through staff and families.
In order to provide ideas a dignity tree has been made where residents, staff and families feelings of what dignity means to them have been transferred onto leaves, these leaves have been added to the tree and will still be added as new thoughts come to peoples minds, who knows we may end up with a dignity forest.
16th February 2013 Snow Fails to Deter Village Pancake Racers:
Snow did not deter the hardy pupils and staff of Theydon Bois Primary School today when they continued with the resurrected tradition of the Village Pancake Races beside the Avenue of Oaks. The races are now in their third year in their present form, revived due to the efforts of School Governor John Eaton and Head Mistress Elspeth Bonds in overcoming the bureaucratic difficulties that had prevented the races taking place for many years.
The bad weather and snow covered ground did not bother the children who threw themselves into the event cheered on by teachers, a few parents and fellow pupils. The difficulties added by the weather just added to the fun and laughter surrounding the event.
Each school class raced between about 9.15am and 12 Noon and each child received a small sticker badge for taking part with a small prize for the winners. But again for everyone present it was more about the fun of this old tradition now revived. Perhaps though the weather will allow the 'frozen tossed' pancakes to be saved for next year?
